Sachiko Adachi, active in Japan between 1946 and 1993 was a visionary Japanese artist and a dear friend of the owner of Mitsuido Gallery. Starting in October 2023, we are excited to announce the exhibition “Sachi, Harmony and Beauty,” which will feature most of her works, at our gallery. Adachi’s artistic journey was a fascinating one. Her works encompassed various forms of art, ranging from illustrations to paintings and even objects such as pots and cups.
What set Adachi apart was her unique approach to creation. She had an uncanny ability to draw without overthinking, often producing her works quickly and intuitively. Her artistic evolution was remarkable as well, as she underwent a radical transformation in style during her lifetime. She transitioned from creating colorful and intricate paintings to embracing simplicity through her brush strokes, all in pursuit of harmony and beauty.

Modern fine art seems to be mostly works that conceptually express the ego and self-assertion, but my work has no ego or self-assertion at all. It is a work that uses waves as art, pursues only the essence, and is completely undirected. Space is art. I would like to continue to explore the essence of the universe through art.
Sachiko Adachi (1946–1993) created work that moved between illustration, painting, and functional objects — cups, pots, vessels shaped by the same intuitive hand that guided her brush. The permanent exhibition “Sachi, Harmony and Beauty” at Mitsuido Gallery presents the most comprehensive collection of Adachi’s works assembled in a single space. Opened in October 2023, it traces the full arc of her artistic evolution — from early illustrative energy to the quiet authority of her later paintings. Adachi was a close friend of the gallery’s founder, and this personal connection lends the exhibition an intimacy that extends beyond conventional curation. Each work was selected not only for its aesthetic quality but for what it reveals about the artist’s deepening relationship with simplicity and form.
Mitsuido Gallery, founded in 1980 in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, has spent over four decades presenting authentic Japanese art to visitors from Japan and abroad. The collection spans paintings, bronze sculpture, wood carving, and ukiyo-e, representing a deliberate commitment to the breadth of Japanese artistic heritage across the Hida region. Adachi’s work holds a distinct place within this collection — her pieces are neither traditional craft nor conventional fine art, but something that moves freely between both.
