Your gateway to Japanese Art
Sachico Adachi was a visionary Japanese artist and a dear friend of the owner of Mitsuido Gallery. Starting in October 2023, we are excited to announce the exhibition “Sachi, Harmony and Beauty,” which will feature many of her works, at our gallery.
Gallery Mitsuido was built in Hida Takayama in 1980.
Japanese art is our passion before it is our business.
Mitsuido Gallery has occupied its place in Hida Takayama since 1980, building over four decades of expertise in the acquisition, curation, and preservation of Japanese art. What began as a dedicated space for traditional works has grown into one of the most respected galleries in the Gifu region — a quiet authority on everything from Edo-period ukiyo-e prints and delicate netsuke carvings to lacquerware, bronze sculpture, ceramics, and contemporary paintings by Japanese artists.
The collection spans approximately four hundred works, each selected for its craftsmanship, provenance, and cultural integrity. Ukiyo-e holdings extend well beyond the familiar names, encompassing masters such as Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi, Utamaro, and Eisen across multiple periods and printing traditions. Lacquerware pieces demonstrate the full range of urushi and makie techniques, while the netsuke selection reflects the precision of Japan’s finest carving schools. The gallery also serves as a restoration center, ensuring that fragile works — hanging scrolls, silk paintings, woodblock prints — endure for future generations. Every category reflects a commitment to authentic Japanese artistry, with no concessions to Western art or mass production.
Takayama itself is inseparable from this mission. A former castle town that came under direct Tokugawa Shogunate administration during the seventeenth century, Hida Takayama developed a distinct artistic culture shaped by its mountain isolation and its master woodworkers. The gallery stands within this living heritage, surrounded by Edo-period merchant houses, seasonal festivals that date back centuries, and the quiet intensity of the Japanese Alps. It is a setting that few galleries anywhere in Japan can match — one where the art and its landscape speak the same language.
Today, under the co-management of Giulio Di Rienzo, an Italian intercultural communication specialist with over a decade of direct experience in the Japanese art market, Mitsuido Gallery serves both visitors exploring Takayama and international collectors seeking a trusted partner in Japan. The gallery is located at 3 Chome Kamiokamotomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0055 and is always open.
